Practicing War: Love Letters from a GI

When war separated them, love letters kept them together

“He must have really loved me,” she told her daughter Lane, repeating the loving words he’d written over 75 years earlier. “These letters mean the world to me—they bring back the story of how it all began.”

Practicing War

More than just a collection of letters, this book follows Ernest’s journey through basic training to the battlefields of France, Germany, and Austria with the 103rd Infantry Division. Using historical records and Ernest’s own stories, author Lane Davis Sauser weaves together the romance with the reality of war, creating a vivid portrait of both the man who wrote the letters and the soldier who lived them.
